Access Description: Reached by a road along the W bank of the York River, from Hwy 500.



Exploration History

1937-39 : The Goulding-Keene Company (U.S.) operated the quarry with a total production (including the Vardy Quarry - lot 23, con 14) of 11,092 tons. This was an attempt to produce ceramic-grade nepheline syenite concentrates from a nepheline pegmatite. The quarry is 80 x 60 ft with a 40 ft face. The pegmatite was drilled (1976).

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The quarry is in nepheline-albite pegmatite that intrudes nepheline-plagioclase gneiss. The pegmatite consists of crystals of nepheline and albite up to 8 ft in diameter with minor biotite, zircon, calcite, apatite, sodalite,cancrinite and hydronephelite. Contacts are well-exposed but much of the pegmatite has been mined out (only remaining in the W and S faces). This is a massive nepheline pegmatite of the York River Nepheline Belt.
