Primary Commodities: Corundum (Gemstones)

Location

Township or Area: Dungannon

Latitude: 45° 4' 24.26"    Longitude: -77° 44' 6.1"

UTM Zone: 18    Easting: 284713.414   Northing: 4994744.281    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Southern Ontario

NTS Grid: 31F04SE

Point Location Description: Dot symbol ' Cor ' nearest Egan Chute and W bank of York River.

Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: The deposit is 450 m N of the Goulding-Keene nepheline quarry and is reached by a trail along the W side of the York River. Outcrops of sodalite occur along the trail and deep blue corundum is seen in several places and at the blasted area (about 180 m S of the chute).

Exploration History

Mineral location. c 1900 : opened as a corundum prospect and considered a potential sapphire occurrence at the time. This area is under intense pressure from rock collectors and is considered highly sensitive. The ' Egan Chute Proposal ' ( lots 11 and 12, con 11 and 12 - N of Hwy 500) has been recomended to protect this and other local areas of geological interest (c 1980).

Geology

Province: Grenville

Geological Age: Mesoproterozoic

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The chute is located at the S end of the York River nepheline syenite gneiss belt where nepheline gneisses are associated with alkalic rocks and intercalated with marble and paragneiss. A complete gradation from nepheline-rich gneisses to calcareous metasediments can be seen, evidence for the metamorphic- metasomatic origin of the gneisses. A 1.5 m thick body of plagiooclase- nepheline-corundum-muscovite-biotite gneiss, forming a 60 m long lens, contains corundum (up to 14 %). The corundum is milky grey to light blue, highly fractured and usually rimmed by muscovite. There is some galena.
