Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Sachigo

Belt: Muskrat Dam Lake

Geological Age: Archean

Geology Comments

Feb 22, 2024 (Nazha Sabiri) - The Muskrat Dam Lake greenstone belt, located within the Sachigo Subprovince comprises metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks that are intruded by felsic to ultramafic granitic batholiths. The belt is marked by regional faults such as the Windigo and Severn River faults while the property area is marked by the Axe Lake deformation zone. Regional metamorphism has transformed the entire belt to greenschist facies in the core, transitioning to almandine amphibolite facies close to intrusive rocks.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Pegmatite 1 Granitic Pegmatite White pegmatite Contains
Breccia-unsubdivided 2 Metagreywacke Adjacent
Mafic lava flow-unsubdivided 3 Adjacent

Lithology Comments

Feb 22, 2024 (Nazha Sabiri) - The Axe Lake current property is located at the intersection of three lithological units: undifferentiated mafic metavolcanic rocks; metasedimentary units composed of metagreywacke and metasiltstone and intrusive units consisting of trondhjemite, granodiorite, quartz monzonite, and white pegmatites. (Map M2164)

Mineralization Comments

Feb 22, 2024 (Nazha Sabiri) - Ayers (1969) documented the presence of a white pegmatite containing albite-oligoclase, quartz, muscovite, tourmaline, garnet, magnetite, molybdenite, and apatite. This pegmatite forms in sills, lenses, and dikes in metasediments and metavolcanics, with a higher abundance along the northern boundary of the Muskrat Dam Lake belt, extending from Axe Lake to the Morrison River. Lewis and Paterson (2020) highlighted the underexplored nature of the area in their report, recommending further exploration. They also noted similarities between the geological settings of mapped outcrop of white pegmatites and muscovite-bearing post-gabbro units and Frontier Lithium’s Pakeagama property. Additionally, they identified potential for lithium-bearing and rare earth element deposits in muscovite-bearing granites and intrusive rocks near the Morrison River. Subsequently, Platinum Inc. (2022) staked claims in the area and announced tantalum and other rare earth elements discovery in the area.
