1869 : plant built by G. Whittington and bought by the Napanee Brick and Tile Co in 1913. 1917 : they went into bankruptcy and the plant was bought by John Chapman. The plant was still in operation in 1967 but is now closed.
Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The clay pit contains 3 kinds of clay, varying in plasticity (a dark grey clay in the top 6 ft, a lighter grey clay in the next 6 ft and a dark grey clay at the bottom of the pit). The lower part is well-stratrified (varved), the upper less so; and this rests on sand and gravel. The varved clay is said to extend to a depth of 18 ft and the peaty clay is said to underlie at least 30 acres with an average depth of 5 ft. Overburden is about 6 inches. In 1967 it was reported that 10 ft of varved clay, oxidized to a medium olive-brown colour, overlay grey varved clay. About 10 % of grey clay was batched with brown clay for most tile sizes, the proportion of grey clay increasing in the larger tile. 3 ft of medium-grained brown sand was stripped from the top of the clay bank. The pit was irregular in shape, about 400 x 200 ft, and opening onto the Napanee River at water-level. See OGS 1967 for a section, anaylses and test results.
