Point Location Description: 'ga' dot symbol at N shore of Fishtail Lake.
Location Method: Conversion from MDI
Access Description: Garnet occurs on the N shore of the lake : approaching from the E garnet outcrops on the S shore of the narrows and on a small island at the NE end of the lake; to the W it outcrops along the N shore at the mouth of a small creek (halfway down the lake) - 30 ft wide, 30 % garnet, large. Garnet is exposed for about 500 yards - see DEMR/CANMET # 677, 1927.
Mineral location : garnet, cordierite and some scapolite, diopside. Testing showed that there would be no problems in concentrating the garnets by gravity and the garnet seemed to have good abrasive qualities (1927).
Province: Grenville
Geological Age: Mesoproterozoic
Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - Cordierite-garnet-gedrite (anthophyllite) rocks and associated gneisses have been studied because of their frequent association with sulphide ore deposits and their anomalous mineral assemblages. This location was the first noted occurrence of cordierite in Canada, and of gedrite in N. America. Garnets occur in a band up to 30 ft wide, are large, clear and red.
