Lithology Comments

Nov 06, 2013 (A Wilson) - The marble is described as medium- to coarse-grained, gneissic, siliceous calcitic marble. It contains 20-60% siliceous impurities and commonly contains thin intercalated units of amphibole-rich metasedimentary rocks. The bedding planes are marked by disseminated graphite flakes ranging from 1/10 to 1/8 of an inch in diameter. The graphite-bearing beds range from seams to beds up to 4 inches in thickness. The bedding strikes N35ºW and dips vertically.

Mineralization Comments

Jan 26, 2017 (A Wilson) - Satterly estimated that hand-picked material would average 10% graphite. Only a small percentage of the limestone graded 10% and at the time the deposit was not considered to be of economic importance. Flake graphite is found in bands and seams in the marble. A few masses of solid amorphous graphite cut by stringers of flake graphite ranging from 1/20 to 1/5 of an inch in width were observed by Satterly in 1943. Some graphite was shipped from the property in 1911. The mill was constructed at this site. The equipment used at this site was shipped to their property near Maynooth.
