Exploration History

Mineral location - black corundum. 1947-8 : opened by L. Moyd on the NW slope of Robertson Hill. There are 10 pits. The best showing was in a stripping about 50 ft N of the S pit (1960). OGS 39-6 (1930) describes the Cooney property where some work was carried out on a pegmatite dyke on the N half of lot 26, con 13. Sodalite is associated with cancrinite and hydronephelite (?). The Lily Robertson and Cooney farms are referred to as one in the literature, but the mineralogy seems to be different. So they are probably 2 separate but closely-connected sites.

Geology

Province: Grenville

Geological Age: Mesoproterozoic

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - Pegmatitic nepheline, albite and corundum (up to 30 %) occur as patchy segregations in a nepheline-plagioclase gneiss. Most corundum is 1/4-3/4 inch long but some reach 3 inches. The corundum exhibits asterism when cut in the cabochon style, yielding star sapphire. The deposit has and exposed length of 200 ft and a width of 10 ft.
