Point Location Description: SHAFT in Guibord Tp.
Location Method: Conversion from MDI
Access Description: Point Located: A point 0.52 km south and 2.54 km east of the northwest corner of Guibord Township The Big Pete occurrence is on patented claim no. 9454, the southwest quarter of the north half of lot 9, concession VI, Guibord Township. The claim straddles Highway 101. Surface workings are reported to be confined to bedrock exposed in the northern part of the claim, as indicated by Prest (1953).
1907: Big Pete Canadian Mines Ltd. was incorporated. Big Pete Canadian Mines is believed to have excavated a 6 by 7 foot prospect pit on what was to become patented claim no. 9454, the southwest quarter of the north half of lot 9, concession VI, Guibord Township (Prest 1953). 1921: The property is reported to have been restaked by H.E. Dyer, with one half interest transferred to D. McRae (Prest 1953). 1936: Moore (1936) reported that no work had been performed on this occurrence for several years. 1953: Prest (1953) examined the property, observed visible gold in dump material, and obtained from a grab sample containing pyrite and sphalerite an assay of 0.02 ounce of gold per ton.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Prest 1953; Satterly 1952; Johnstone and Trowell 1984, 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone 1987; Johnstone and Steel 1989, Troop 1989; Vagners 1984; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that bedrock near the occurrence is largely glacial drift covered and consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) turbiditic sediments of the (Archean) Porcupine Group and subaqueously deposited felsic to ultramafic volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group. Bedrock strikes southeast, dips steeply, faces north, and occupies part of the south limb of the southeast striking and northwest plunging McCool Hill Syncline. Intrusive rocks in the area include felsic syenite dikes, east striking lamprophyre dikes, and narrow (tens of metres in width) generally north striking diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm (Heaman 1989). A recent geophysical survey of Guibord Township (OGS 1984) failed to detect any significant bedrock conductors to be associated with the pitted auriferous quartz veins.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Prest (1953) reported that a vertical 6 by 7 foot shaft is sunk on variably carbonatized and sericitized interbedded meta- sediments, possibly near a porphyritic felsic intrusive body about 420 m southwest of the Contact Fault, a southeast striking and steeply north dipping fault which is closely associated with the Porcupine/Stoughton-Roquemaure Group contact in Guibord and Munro Townships. Waste rock adjacent to the shaft and vein material reported to have come from the shaft are reported (Prest 1953) to consist of grey/white quartz-carbonate vein and stringer material which contains sericitized greywacke xenoliths and fine grained disseminated pyrite, galena, and sphalerite. Galena and sphalerite are reported to occur in seams marginal to the veins and stringers as well as in the hydrothermal vein material. A pyritic and sphalerite bearing grab sample analyzed by Prest (1953) is reported to have averaged 0.02 ounce of gold per ton. Prest (1953) reported that a prospect pit located about 325 feet northeast of the Big Pete Canadian Mines shaft appears to have explored a quartz stringer reported to contain visible gold.
