Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Rand No. 1 iron range merges with the Goudreau B iron range to the east and is cut off by the transverse McVeigh Creek Fault to the west. The iron formation has been left laterally displaced 1900 m to the south and would correlate with the north band of the Rand No. 2 iron range in Abotossaway Township. It lies within the northern domain of the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This domain is located immediately south of the Maskinonge Lake stock and is composed of brittle to brittle-ductile high-strain zones.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Sulphide Ironstone 1 Sulphide Facies Massive Host
Intermediate Tuff-Breccia 2 Carbonated Tuff, Breccia Footwall

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Intermediate to felsic tuff, lapilli tuff and oigomictic breccias are exposed on the south side of the iron range. These rocks are highly carbonated and may contain up to 20% chloritoid porphyroblasts. The iron formation consists of massive pyrite with subordinate granular glassy silica. The north side of the pit contains more silica than the south side, and locally, banded silica is present on the north side. The south side of the pit is bounded by an undulating shear plane.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Published analyses from the raw ore were 38.48% S and tr As; afer roasting the ore was beneficiated to 57.84% Fe, 2.43% S, 10.014 % P and 1.10% Mn. In 1918, the surficial pyritic sands deposits were examined by the GSC and the pyrite was mineralogically and chemically purer than that found within the sulphide-facies iron formation.

Site Visit Information

Date: Jun 26, 2000

Geologist: A Wilson

Notes: At the time of the most recent visit, the pit had been rehabilitated. The pit had been filled in and seeded with grass and the western most access road had been bermed over preventing vehicular access. Nine monitoring wells are present on the south side of the former pit. The western end of the pit area appears to still be actively used for gravel/sand extraction for local purposes.
