Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The Lampson Road zinc-copper occurrence is located in the Wawa Subprovince approximately 21.5 km north-northeast of the Hemlo gold mines. The area surrounding the occurrence is underlain primarily by a northeasterly-trending sequence of mafic to felsic metavolcanic and lesser metasedimentary rocks which comprise a portion of the the north limb of the Schreiber-Hemlo greenstone belt (Milne 1968, Maps 2146 and 2147; Siragusa and Chivers 1986, Map P.3046). In the vicinity of the occurrence, the belt has been folded into a large easterly-plunging syncline (Milne 1968, Map 2146). The occurrence is located along the north limb of this structure. The supracrustal rocks in this area are locally strongly foliated (094 degrees /70 degrees S) and mineral assemblages indicate they have experienced upper greenschist to lower amphibolite facies-grade regional metamorphism (Milne 1968; Charlton 1992). In the vicinity of the occurrence, the supracrustal sequence is approximately 7.5 km wide and is bounded to the north, south, east and west by granodioritic rocks of the Black-Pic Batholith, the Musher Lake Pluton, the Dotted Lake Batholith and the Gowan Lake Pluton, respectively (Milne 1968, Maps 2146 and 2147). The northern portion of the belt, in the vicinity of the occurrence is dominated by massive to pillowed basalts which contain minor metasedimentary interbeds (Milne 1968). The occurrence is located approximately 700 m south of the contact with the Black-Pic Batholith. Numerous, narrow, felsic dikes have intruded and locally brecciated the rocks hosting the occurrence. Medium- to coarse-grained, relatively massive amphibolites in the area may represent subvolcanic, gabbroic intrusions. The Jenny Creek Fault, a regional-scale, northerly-trending structure is located approximately 800 m west of the occurrence.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Field examinations have revealed that the occurrence consists of erratically distributed sulphides hosted in intercalated mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks The mafic metavolcanic rocks consist of fine- to medium-grained, moderately to locally strongly foliated (94 /70 S), dark gray-green, chlorite-hornblende schists. The metasedimentary rocks consist primarily of folded and faulted oxide-facies banded iron formation. Anhedral garnet porphyroblasts, up to 5 mm in diameter, may locally comprise up to 10% of the iron formation. The metasedimentary rocks form a band approximately 10 m wide within the volcanic sequence. A rusty, pyritic, biotite-sericite schist occurs within a 30 cm wide shear zone located near the contact between the metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. Numerous narrow, foliation-parallel and crosscutting quartz and quartz-epidote veins and veinlets occur in the area.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The sulphides appear to be confined to the iron formation and the mafic metavolcanic rocks located proximal to the iron formation. The mineralized zone is approximately 40 cm wide and can be traced along strike for approximately 5 m. The sulphides have undergone remobilization and generally constitute less than 1% of the rocks in which they occur. Fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite occur as very thin coatings along fractures and foliation planes within the iron formation. Sphalerite appears to be confined to the mafic metavolcanic rocks where it occurs in thin, erratically distributed, foliation-parallel seams and isolated patches associated with quartz. Grab samples collected from the occurrence in 1991 by D. B. McKay (OGS) and by prospectors L. and B. Brinklow returned assay values which varied from nil to 0.002 ounce Au/ton, nil Ag, 49 to 3250 ppm Cu and 27 to 13400 ppm Zn. Charlton (1992) provides the following comments regarding the occurrence: Mineralization in both mafic and intermediate volcanics typically takes the form of thin (1 to 2 metre) siliceous iron formations, and sheared volcanics, both typically with 1 to 5 percent pyrite. Both form gossans which are readily identified during field mapping. At this showing, occasional stringers of visible sphalerite could be found on shear planes and in the noses of small scale folds in highly schistose mafic volcanics along the south side of Lampson Road (Sheet 2), but detailed sampling yielded no significant metal values. The highest values obtained on the Brinklow showing were 0.01% copper and 0.15% zinc in a whole rock minor element sample. Grab sample assays from the Brinklow showing showed no significant values.
