Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Schnieders et al (1996) describe the occurrence as follows: In the vicinity of the occurrence, a small remnant tongue of mafic metavolcanic rocks occurs within granitic to quartz dioritic rocks of the Terrace Bay Batholith. Carter (1967) identifies the metavolcanic rocks as biotite-hornblende- plagioclase schist and gneiss on which it is believed a shaft was sank, possibly on a quartz vein. Dump material from the shaft consists of broken quartz vein material with a small amount of mafic metavolcanic material. The quartz varies from being massive, white bull quartz to being more sugary or more crystalline. The only sulphides observed in the dump were within slickensided mafic metavolcanic material hosting the quartz vein. The dimensions of the shaft are about 1.83 m x 1.83 m. The shaft is full of water and debris. The shaft has been fenced off.
