Exploration History

1940: Claims were staked in August by Lorne and Jack Dempster for Pioneer Gold Mines of BC Ltd. following the discovery of rusty mineralized zones on the south side of Pioneer Lake. The No. 1 Discovery produced gold on panning. The No. 2 discovery was found independently by the Dempsters and a survey party of the ODM approximately one claim north of the No. 1 Discovery. Stripping, trenching, sampling and prospecting were conducted by the Dempster brothers.

Geology Comments

Jul 18, 2006 (C Salo) - The geology of the area in the vicinity of this occurrence has been mapped by Prest (1944) and Thurston and Carter (1970). Information from these sources indicates that the Pioneer Lake occurrence is located in an area that is largely underlain by intermediate to mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. However, numerous other rock types have also been reported in this area. Prest (1944) refers to the metasedimentary rocks north of Pioneer Creek as Timiskaming conglomerate and notes that the intermediate to mafic metavolcanic rocks near the creek have undergone significant carbonatization. White weathering rhyolites, porphyry dikes and gabbroic intrusive rocks were also described in this area. The Pioneer Lake occurrence is located in close proximity to two significant northeasterly-trending faults mapped by Prest (1944). A north-south striking fault was also interpreted to be present in the area. It is probable that the occurrence of the gold mineralized vein system in this location was associated with the migration of hydrothermal fluids through one or more of these fault structures.

Mineralization Comments

Jul 18, 2006 (C Salo) - The Pioneer Lake occurrence consists of two showings (No. 1 and No. 2 discoveries) documented by Prest (1944). The No. 1 discovery was located on the south side of Pioneer Lake and is poorly documented, although favourable gold assays were reported to have been obtained from this occurrence. The No. 2 discovery was located one claim north of Pioneer Lake, and is described as being hosted in a quartz vein up to 12 feet wide and over 300 feet long. Additional gold-bearing zones associated with quartz stringers parallel to the volcanic host rock schistosity were also documented. Vein mineralization was reported to include quartz, carbonate, arsenopyrite, pyrite and occasional pyrrhotite. It is important to note that the gold at this location was only found in veins that were mineralized with arsenopyrite. Prest (1944) also noted that the mineralization was located adjacent to a porphyry dike that caused an appreciable magnetic disturbance. Extensive iron carbonate alteration was also noted in the volcanic host rocks.

Alteration Comments

Jul 18, 2006 (C Salo) - Extensive carbonitization of volcanic host rocks.
