Location Method: Other Literature
Access Description: The Stenlund occurrence is located approximately 5 km east of the Highway 11 turnoff at Nipigon (Corrigal Township, formerly Township 92, claim map G-140). Access is via Highway 17. A skidder road leads to the north to the occurrences, at 60 and 170 m north along the road. A third area was located 100 m west of the the logging road and approximately 30 m north of Highway 17.
1988: D. Stenlund staked 2 claims in September, after uncovering veins with a bulldozer during wood cutting operations. Minor prospecting and sampling was conducted. 1994: T. Niskanen staked the occurrence and conducted prospecting and sampling.
Province: Superior
Geological Age: Archean
Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - The property is underlain by flat-lying Sibley Group sedimentary rocks of the Lower Rossport Formation. Brick-red to orange muddy dolomitic limestones are interbedded with buff-coloured, sandier units. Small beige reduction spots occur in the red, hematite-rich limestone. Similar alteration (reduction of the ferric iron) occurs along the joints. Veins are exposed in two locations, 60 m and 170 m north of Highway 17. At the occurrence nearer the highway, 0.5 to 6.0 cm wide quartz and barite +/- amethyst veins occupy a parallel fracture set apparently controlled by a dominant set of at 070-085 degrees SE. Vein breccias up to 20 cm wide and larger cavities and vugs appear to have developed preferentially in a sandier unit which locally overlies the red limestone. Brecciated rock fragments are grey and green in some cases, presumably due to the vein alteration. Small, parallel quartz-barite filled fractures and veinlets, also striking 070 degrees, occur 110 m north of the aforementioned occurrence. Pieces of barite, baritic vein and breccia float are abundant in the vicinity. However, their source was not found. The flat relief and lack of outcrop necessitates extensive overburden stripping.

Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - The dolomitic limestones are brick-red to orange. The sandier units are buff-colored.

Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - Colorless, smoky and amethystine quartz and rare citirine occur with white and pink, bladed to massive barite. Druzy quartz is commonly associated with barite seams. Lavendar to deep purple amethyst crystals with pyramidal terminations are 0.2 to 15 mm across their bases.
Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - Hematite is being reduced to an unspecified mineral.
Date: Feb 28, 1997
