Abstract: This article in “Summary of Field Work and Other Activities” describes the results of analyses of samples obtained from telescoped drill core (2 inch or 5 cm pieces) archived in the Timmins office of the Resident Geologist Program core storage facility. The core was obtained from drill-hole L-13 in Loveland Township (drilled by Hollinger Exploration in 1968) at a location known as the Enid Creek prospect.

The interpretations in this article are based on major, trace element, sulphur and loss-on-ignition analyses for 30 core samples; backscattered electron (BSE) analyses for 8 polished thin sections, X-ray diffraction (XRD) results for 30 pulp samples and 8 polished thin section samples, and petrographic descriptions of the 8 polished thin sections; and relogging of more than 30 core samples.

In the Enid Creek prospect, massive and disseminated sulphide mineralization, containing high abundances of bismuth, cobalt, copper, nickel, palladium, platinum, selenium and tellurium, is hosted in hydrothermally altered gabbro. These elements are hosted in cobaltite, chalcopyrite, kotulskite, merenskyite, pentlandite and sperrylite. These “economic” minerals, as well as the mineralogy of the altered wall rocks and Pd/Pt ratios of the samples analyzed, are comparable to that of the Lac des Iles deposit, near Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to report on research results identifying which minerals host high abundances of bismuth, cobalt, copper, nickel, palladium, platinum, selenium and tellurium previously obtained from analyses of drill core samples.

The purpose of the “Summary of Field Work and Other Activities” publication is to release preliminary data on recent activities and from works in progress by the Ontario Geological Survey.
