Point Location Description: Old trench on shoreline of Clam Lake
Location Method: Field Visit with GPS
Access Description: Access is via the Chester logging road which branches off the Sultan mail haul road. For this road, easy access is possible to the more recent trenches via an exploration trail and then to the shore of Clam Lake via an overgrown trail. Alternatively, boat access is possible directly to the old trenches across Clam Lake from the landing on theold Chester Shannon mine access road.

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The main trench is centred on a 1 m thick shear zone which doesnot appear to be part of a network of shear zones. In the stripped area, the smaller quartz veins are attenuated, locally are rotated in an anti-clockwise manner or form an en echelon array with a left handed step.

Feb 09, 2015 (A Wilson) - The main rock type is a massive medium-grained siliceous granodiorite. There are also significant occurrences of a medium-grained hornblende diorite to quartz diorite, which may be a related phase in the Chester Granitoid Complex. The granodiorite is cut by a number of shear zones with gradational boundaries to the more massive phases. In the stripped area, parallel to the shear zone is a 4 m thick, biotitic lamprophyre dike. This dike is moderately foliated with the same orientation as the adjacent shear zone. In contrast, there are some strongly altered/foliated mafic dikes together with medium grained felsic dikes that contain approximately 30% orientated mafic grains. All the rock types present are pervasively altered by carbonate. This is generally weak in the granodiorite, diorite and lamprophyre dikes, but is markedly stronger in the shear zones and mafic dikes. In the stripped area, chlorite alteration is common as wispy veins within the shear zone, and as mantles surrounding the quartz veins. Biotite occurs in discrete thin lamellae within the sheared material. tourmaline and magnetite alteration have been reported.

Feb 09, 2015 (A Wilson) - There are a number of quartz or quartz and iron carbonate veins within a shear zone exposed in the trenches. The veins pinch and swell from 2m to thin stringers. The surrounding shear zone locally contains sparse disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite. Mineralization within the veins varies from rather lean to pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold intimately associatated with biotite near the lamprophyre contacts. In the stripped area, rust spots centred on pyrite grains occur, but are not concentrated in any unit. A grab sample collected by the OGS in 193 returned 0.02 g/t Au, 0.1 g/t Ag.
