Feb 11, 2016 (R Degagne) - Geological mapping indicates that the area is underlain mainly by weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) massive and pillowed tholeiitic basalts of the (Archean) Stoughton- Roquemaure Group. Local volcanic stratigraphy strikes east southeast, dips steeply, faces north and occupies part of the south limb of the southeast striking and northwest plunging McCool Hill Syncline, the dominant regional scale structure north of the south branch of the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone in the central BRIM area. Johnston noted the following concerning the Painkiller Lake Fault: Recent regional geology compilation maps have interpreted the western extension of the Munro Fault Zone as consisting of the Painkiller Lake Fault in northern Beatty Township, and the Pipestone Fault which borders the northern edge of the Porcupine Group west of the study area. The connection between these three faults could not be established during field mapping. The linking Painkiller Lake Fault, shown on the Beatty Township map in this study as an independent structural element, is a younger strike-slip fault which cannot be considered part of the long fault represented on the regional maps. Data from the Blue Quartz Mine on the south shore of Painkiller Lake and a displaced Matachewan diabase dike in the area, indicate that the Painkiller Lake Fault, dipping 80 degrees north, is a strike-slip fault with a significant horizontal (dextral-800 feet) component of displacement. The Pipestone Fault is known not to be a strike-slip fault and there is no evidence of strike-slip faults within the Munro Fault Zone.

Feb 11, 2016 (R Degagne) - Satterly and Armstrong provided the following description of the Amalgamated Goldfields Corp. Ltd. (formerly Blue Quartz Gold Mines Ltd.) deposit: During the field seasons of 1944, the [Blue Quartz] mine remained flooded, making impossible any underground work by the writers. The following notes on the geology underground are based largely upon a private report by Hopkins [P.E.Hopkins, report for Blue Quartz Gold Mines, Limited 1927]. The most abundant rocks in the vicinity of the mine are andesitic and basaltic flows, most of which are pillowed or show flow breccias. In general these rocks are fairly massive and somewhat altered by carbonatization. The lavas have been intruded by gabbro peridotite, which is locally altered to serpentine. These basic intrusives, as well as the lavas, are in turn cut by feldspar porphyry dikes, which extend in an almost east-west direction. Some of the mine buildings are located on outcrops of a dike of coarse grained olivine diabase, about 800 feet in width, which forms the southeast boundary of the minable area. A few narrow dikelets penetrate the adjacent country rock as offshoots of the big dike. the central BRIM area. The shaft is a few tens of metres north of a gently folded 240 m wide northeast striking olivine diabase dike of the (Proterozoic) Abitibi swarm and a few tens of metres southwest of the interpreted location of the Painkiller Lake Fault, a southeast striking structure which along part of its length underlies the southwest shore of Painkiller Lake. Narrow (tens of metres in width) north striking quartz diabase dikes of the (Proterozoic) Matachewan swarm occur in the area (although not near the old workings) and narrow (metres in width) lamprophyre dikes also occur.

Feb 11, 2016 (A Wilson) - The Blue Quartz Vein was intersected in all three holes drilled in 2010. The Blue Quartz mineralized system appears to consist of two to three distinct mineralized zones (1.5 to 5 m in thickness) separated by approximately 10-25 m of weakly mineralized pillowed basalts. The veins comprise 10-20% of the mineralized zone and contain varying quantities of pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotitie, reddish brown sphalerite and chalcopyrite. No significant gold values were returned from the Blue Quartz system. The No. 2 Vein displays a 1.5 to 2.5 m thick zone of coarse-grained cubic to buckshot pyrite. No other sulphide types were noted throughout the zone. Significant results include 5.3 g/t Au over 2.8 m; including 9.96 g/t Au and 5.7 g/t Ag over 1.0 m. Additional assays from the No. 2 vein include 23.8 g/t Au over 1 m, including 11.9 g/t Au over 2.8 m in RBQ-10-02 and 57.4 g/t Au over 0.2 m, included within 1.6 g/t Au over 9.1 m in RBQ-10-03.
Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Gold values have been found in two main veins, the discovery or Blue Quartz vein, on which the early work was done, and the No.2 vein, which lies under the lake 750 feet north of the shaft. The Blue Quartz vein is composed of bluish quartz and carries considerable amounts of pyrite together with varying quantities of pyrrhotite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, telluride and gold. The No.2 or Main vein extends in a roughly east-west direction and dips steeply toward the south. Specimens collected from the dump during the summer of 1945 are almost certainly from this vein. Examination of them shows dark quartz and silicified wall rock mineralized with arsenopyrite and pyrite, together with some chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and sphalerite. In some specimens the sulphide mineralization is very heavy. In places the wall rock is mineralized with coarse pyrite cubes. Specimens of the feldspar porphyry show half-inch veinlets of quartz with pyrite and arsenopyrite; the veinlets are bordered by narrow bands of chloritic material. No visible gold was found in any of the specimens, but it is reported to be coarse and nuggety. (p.24-25) Dump samples observed by Bath (1990) suggest that the No.2 vein system gold-sulfide mineralization is associated with brittle deformational regime quartz and quartz-calcite veins and veinlets hosted by variably Fe-dolomitized basalt and/or silicified and/or recrystallized interflow sedimentary material. Once formed, the quartz-(carbonate) vein material and siliceous host rock appear to have been tectonically shattered and sulfidized along fractures prior to having been brecciated and recemented by chloritic gouge.

Dump samples observed by the present writer suggest that the No.2 vein system gold-sulfide mineralization is associated with brittle deformational regime quartz and quartz-calcite veins and veinlets hosted by variably Fe-dolomitized basalt and/or silicified and/or recrystallized interflow sedimentary material. Once formed, the quartz-(carbonate) vein material and siliceous host rock appear to have been tectonically shattered and sulfidized along fractures prior to having been brecciated and recemented by chloritic gouge. The earliest hydrothermal regime to which the observed samples were subjected appears to have caused dolomitization (as manifested by pervasive host rock Fe-dolomitization), silicification (as manifested by deposition of grey vein quartz), and deposition of sulfide minerals and native gold while later hydrothermal regimes appear to have resulted in formation of quartz, calcite, sulfide minerals, and (possibly) native gold.
