Point Location Description: Collar of drillhole LX-7A, Abitibi River, 1.5km south of Williams Island
Location Method: Based on Assessment
Access Description: The Ontario Northland Railway line, running from Cochrane to Moosonee, parallels Abitibi River approximately 2km to the west of the river at the occurrence location. Land to either side of the river in the vicinity of this occurrence has been withdrawn from staking.
1951-60: Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission: geology, integrated geophysical survey (resistivity, magneto-telluric, refraction and gravity) 1974: Aquitaine Company of Canada Ltd - Drilling, geophysical logging, geochemical analyses; holes 74-1 and 74-2 drilled in vicinity of occurrence 1979-80: Ontario Hydro: occurrence hole (LX-7A) drilled by Ontario Hydro. 1981-89: Ontario Energy Corp. - Preliminary investigation; analyses of existing drillcore, outcrop channel sampling and analysis, geotechnical drilling and trenching; 1989: Ontario Hydro: 4 holes within 200m of LX-7A (BH-102, 106, 109, 113); trenching on east bank of river approximately 500m south of occurrence. 1997-98: Falconbridge Ltd. - Diamond drilling to west of river

Mar 20, 2014 (D Draper) - The Long Rapids Formation shale overlies Williams Island Formation limestone. Williams Island itself is on the northeast-trending (110 deg azm) axis of an anticlinal structure. The Long Rapids shale form the flanks of this arch, dipping generally northwest or southeast from 18 to 35 degrees. Exposure of the shales up to 50 feet high are frequent over a 5-mile stretch of river in this area. Work by Onexco indicated that the highest organic content in the formation appeared to trend in a line running northwest from the river. Drilling by Falconbridge to the west of the river in 1997-98 would seem to confirm this, with intersections with bituminous shale from 22 to 90m in width found in 6 holes drilled on a line running.

Mar 20, 2014 (D Draper) - The hydrocarbon is hosted by the middle member of the Long Rapids Formation which consists predominantly of black, grey and dark brown bituminous shale with minor thin bands of greenish-grey clay (pelite). This formation outcrops along the eastern bank of the Abitibi River in the vicinity of the occurrence drill hole, which was collared in the middle of the river.

Mar 20, 2014 (D Draper) - A 53-foot section of core from Ontario Hydro drillhole LX-7A (true thickness 36 feet) yielded 8 US gallons/ton of oil by Fischer Assay and had an organic carbon content of 7.54%. Within this core, there is a 16-foot section (true thickness 11 feet) that compares favourably with the best of the results from eastern United States oil shale investigations, [yielding a Fischer Assay of 10.2 US gal/ton].
