Oct 12, 2006 (Mark Puumala) - The geology of the Miminiska Peninsula area was mapped by Wallace (1981), who identified three major supracrustal rock sequences. These include two mafic metavolcanic-dominated sequences and one metasedimentary rock-dominated sequence. The oldest of these units is interpreted to be a thick, predominantly mafic metavolcanic sequence that is found in the southern portion of the Miminiska Peninsula and the area immediately south of Miminiska Lake. These mafic metavolcanic rocks have in turn been interpreted to be overlain by a metasedimentary rock sequence that is dominated by wacke and mudstone, but also contains significant thicknesses of banded iron formation. The metasedimentary sequence is overlain to the north by a second mafic-metavolcanic rock-dominated sequence. A significant unit of felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks has also been mapped in the western portion of this area (southeast of Howells Lake). This unit is located immediately south of the metasedimentary sequence west of Miminiska Lake, but is enclosed within the metasedimentary rocks further to the east. This area is bounded to the northwest by felsic intrusive rocks of the Troutfly Lake Batholith. Stratigraphic units in the vicinity of Howells Lake generally strike approximately northeast, with steep, near-vertical dip. Further to the northeast, towards Keezhik Creek, stratigraphy strikes in a more easterly orientation. Wallace (1981) indicates that foliation is generally oriented sub-parallel to the primary sedimentary bedding and igneous flow contact features. Foliation and shearing are noted by Clark (2005) to be most prominent in tuffaceous mafic metavolcanic layers. Wallace (1981b) mapped a number of northeast-trending faults and lineaments in this area. More recent maps (e.g., McKay 2004) illustrate a northeast-striking fault that parallels the metavolcanic/metasedimentary rock contact in the vicinity of Howells Lake. This structure appears to be related to many of the gold and antimony/gold occurrences in this area.

Oct 12, 2006 (Mark Puumala) - Clark (2005) reports that New Jersey Zinc encountered gold mineralization in diamond drill hole 80-MW-13. This drill hole was advanced to the east of the hinge of a fold interpreted from geophysical survey data. The rocks encountered in this drill hole were described as feldspathic arenite with minor wacke. Gold was reportedly encountered in a 1.3 foot wide zone of quartz-carbonate veining (assay value of 0.047 oz/ton). This vein material was mineralized with up to 3% pyrrhotite and pyrite, with trace chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The mineralization was encountered near the contact with a quartz-feldspar porphyry intrusion.
