Mineralization Comments

Dec 22, 2006 (Mark Puumala) - The Southwest Powderhouse Zone consists of two areas of gold mineralization in iron formation referred to as the A/B and 1347 Zones (Laderoute 1989b). The iron formation(s) occur within a sequence dominated by mafic metavolcanic rocks. Laderoute (1989b) notes that the mineralization in the A/B zone occurs in the hinge zone of a fold. The fold has been interpreted by Laderoute (1989b) to be an anticline (northeast-plunging) that has been folded about a northeast-striking axial plane (Powderhouse Lake Anticline). Considerable brittle deformation (i.e., tension fractures and brecciation) is also reported, especially in the hinge zone of the fold. The most significant mineralization is reported by Laderoute (1989b) to be centred upon the fold hinge, extending for approximately 45 m on each limb. This gold mineralization is also reported to extend to a depth of at least 110 m. Primary magnetite and secondary chlorite (i.e., a product of greenschist facies metamorphism of the iron formation) in the mineralized zone is reported by Laderoute (1989a) to have been sulphidized to pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. Pervasive silicification, including quartz veining and tension fracture filling is also reported in this zone by Laderoute (1989a). Gold occurs in association with the sulphides, most commonly as free grains, but sometimes within sulphides (Laderoute 1989a). The western portion of the A/B zone (originally referred to as the B zone) which is exposed on surface approximately 60 m west of the gold mineralized fold hinge, has been interpreted by Laderoute (1989b) to represent a portion of the iron formation that has been cross-folded into a dome-like structure around a north-northwest striking axis. The A/B zone is also reported to terminate to the north against an interpreted northwest-striking late (D3) fault (Laderoute 1989a). An approximate grade of 0.22 oz/ton Au over an average width of approximately 2 m was estimated for the fold hinge portion of the A/B zone by Laderoute (1989b). Significant gold values were also reported from diamond drilling in the western portions of the A/B zone by Laderoute (1989b). However, no grade estimates were provided for this mineralization. The 1347 Zone is reported by Laderoute (1989b) to be located approximately 300 m west of the A/B Zone. Significant gold values were only reported from one drill hole (CP-89-193) advanced by Noramco in 1989. McGregor (1993) provides a resource estimate of 21,000 tons grading 0.22 oz Au/ton for the anticlinal part of the mineralized structure. Recent diamond drilling by King's Bay Gold (Archibald 2004) in the vicinity of the Southwest Powderhouse Zone has resulted in numerous significant gold intersections.
