03/29/2007 (M A Puumala) - The Apple Island Occurrence is located within the Altered Zone Fault deformation zone. The Altered Zone Fault is described by Allen (1986) as a generally WNW-ESE-striking, relatively shallow dipping (<50 degrees to the NE) structure characterized by intense alteration and brittle-ductile deformation. Alteration minerals in this deformation zone include sericite, carbonate, chlorite and silica (including quartz veins and silica flooding). In addition, Bonner (1991) indicates the presence of apple green mica in sheared mafic material. Allen (1986) also indicates that a hydrothermal carbonate breccia commonly envelops the deformation zone. The surface expression of the Altered Zone Fault in the Apple Island area is reported by Bonner (1991b) to be located at the contact between basalt to the north and gabbro to the south. The deformation zone on Apple Island is reported to be characterized by intense shearing, alteration and brecciation, with apple green mica and quartz veining. The areas at the margin of the deformation zone in both lithologies are reported by Bonner (1991) to show little evidence of alteration, but are cross-cut by carbonate-filled fractures that are up to 10 cm wide. Channel sampling of a single outcrop of intensely shered and altered gabbro on Apple Island is reported by Bonner to have produced assay values of up to 785 ppb Au over 1 m. A grab sample assay of 725 ppb Au was also reported by Bonner (1991; Assessment report 52O11SW0015) from a sample of sheared and brecciated gabbro collected nearby on the south shore of McVicar Lake.
09/26/2019 (T Pettigrew) - DDH ML-92-72 assayed up to 0.72 ppm Au over 1.4 m and 2.3 ppm Au over 1.3 m. DDH ML-92-74 assayed 0.56 ppm Au over 1.5 m and 2.3 ppm Au over 1.2 m (Assessment report 52O11SW0006). Highlights of results from surface rock sampling at the Apple Island Zone reported gold assays averaging 0.95 g/t Au over 1.5 metres from three contiguous 0.5 metre chip samples taken across the strike of the zone in samples ML-17-06, 07 and 08 with an adjacent grab sample containing visible gold returning an assay of 9.2 g/t Au (Assessment report 20000015742).
