Mineralization Comments

May 23, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - This occurrence is based upon anomalous gold mineralization within brecciated iron formation reported by Farstad (1982). The geology in the vicinity of the occurrence is described by Farstad (1982) as consisting of mafic metavolcanics to the northwest. These rocks are overlain by a southeast-facing sequence of interbedded chert-magnetite iron formation (brecciated) and laminated mudstone. Carbonatized fragmental metavolcanics and metasedimentary rocks (including sandstone, chert pebble conglomerate and mudstone) occur further to the southeast, where Bateman (1939) described a mineralized zone referred to as the J Location. Mapping by Farstad (1982) indicates that stratigraphy in the vicinity of the occurrence strikes approximately northeast and dips steeply (85 degrees) to the southeast. Anomalous gold assays were reported by Farstad (1982) from an arsenopyrite-bearing zone (Cut No. 2) in the brecciated iron formation. Notable results from this program included a 3.05 m channel sample that averaged 0.025 oz/ton Au, with a 0.7 m section that assayed 0.05 oz/ton Au. Farstad (1982) also reported trace gold concentrations nearby in association with arsenopyrite in the matrix of the quartz pebble conglomerate (J Location). Bateman (1939) described the J Location as a mineralized chert pebble conglomerate interbedded with rusty weathering greywacke, arkosic quartzite and slate. Mineralization was reported to consist of pyrite, varying amounts of arsenopyrite, and minor pyrrhotite and chalocopyrite occurring within the conglomerate matrix. The mineralized conglomerate was indicated to be approximately 4.5 to 7.5 m wide and has a strike length in excess of 150 m. Bateman (1939) reported gold assays from the J Location of less than 0.04 oz/ton.
