Mar 07, 2008 (Mark Puumala) - McWilliams, Gillan and Smith (1981) report that this occurrence is found in an area dominated by muskeg and overburden with few, widely scattered, outcrops. Airborne geophysical surveys carried out by the Great Plains Development Company of Canada over the Horseshoe Lake greenstone belt in 1971 resulted in the identification of a number of geophysical anomalies that were subsequently tested during a 25 hole diamond drilling program. This occurrence is based on assay results reported by McWilliams, Gillan and Smith (1981) to have been obtained from Great Plains Development Company's diamond drill hole number 72-D-14. McWilliams, Gillan and Smith (1981) report that the diamond drilling program carried out by Great Plains Development Company in this area intersected an assemblage of sedimentary and volcanic schists and gneisses, with granite and quartz/carbonate veins being encountered in some holes. The geophysical anomalies (magnetic and electromagnetic) were interpreted to have been caused by pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization, which was found in all drill holes (McWilliams, Gillan and Smith 1981). A drill hole summary log for 72-D-14 provided by McWilliams, Gillan and Smith (1981) indicates that significant copper assays were obtained from samples collected from two portions of the drill hole. The first mineralized zone was hosted in a mica schist unit that was encountered at a depth of 50.3 to 55.8 m below surface. The mica schist was reported to be mineralized with 20 to 30% pyrrhotite, with copper assays ranging from 0.6 to 1.5%. However, the lengths and depths of the assayed intervals are not provided. The mineralized mica schist was reported to be overlain by a quartz vein and underlain by quartz diorite. The second mineralized zone was reported by McWilliams, Gillan and Smith (1981) to be hosted by a quartz diorite unit located 96.25 to 123 m below surface. The mineralized quartz diorite was reported to contain quartz veins mineralized with 2-5% pyrrhotite and 1-2% pyrite. Copper assays ranging from 0.09 to 2.9% are reported to have been obtained from this zone. However, the lengths and depths of the assayed intervals are again not provided.
