Mineralization Comments

Mar 12, 2008 (Mark Puumala) - Burk (1988) indicated that this gold occurrence is hosted in a metasedimentary rock-dominated sequence consisting of interbedded mudstone and garnetiferous oxide facies iron formation. The iron formation comprises approximately 60% of this sequence and consists of an almandine garnet-magnetite-grunerite-chert assemblage. In the area of the occurrence, magnetite has been almost completely replaced by grunerite and secondary iron formation sulphidization (2 to 10%) consisting of pyrrhotite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite has been noted. Quartz-feldspar porphyry has been noted to the south, east and north of the mineralized metasedimentary rock unit by Burk (1988). The most notable assay from this zone (0.37 oz/ton Au over 1.5 m) is reported by Burk (1988) to have been obtained from a section of diamond drill hole NK-87-07 that contained a 0.25 m wide quartz-tourmaline vein containing visible gold. The visible gold was reported to have an intimate association with fine-grained tourmaline. Anomalous gold assays were also reported from the iron formation immediately adjacent to the quartz vein, resulting in an average value of 0.13 oz/ton Au over 4.5 m (Burk 1988). Occurrence-grade gold assays of up to 0.045 oz/ton were also reported from diamond drill holes NK-87-15 and 29 (Burk 1988) and NK-88-4 (Timoshenko and Corkery 1989). This occurrence is located immediately northwest of the Subgrid A - Area 1 prospect, but is shown to be separated from it by a northeast-striking fault on a geological compilation map prepared by Talbot (1996). Burk (1988) suggested that the anomalous gold values are concentrated within a zone that trends at approximately 315 degrees azimuth. This is approximately parallel to the axial plane of a fold interpreted to occur in the area on the geological compilation map of Talbot (1996).
