Mineralization Comments

03/17/2008 (M A Puumala) - The Santa Maria Area 2 occurrence is located near the southern boundary of the North Caribou greenstone belt. The area is reported by Huston and Timoshenko (1988) to be underlain by two main supracrustal rock units. These include the predominantly mafic to ultramafic metavolcanic rocks of the Opapimiskan unit of the McGruer assemblage and the clastic metasedimentary Zeemel-Heaton assemblage (Thurston, Osmani and Stone 1991). Stratigraphy and foliation in the area generally strike east (Huston and Timoshenko 1988). Huston and Timoshenko (1988) reported that this occurrence, which is based on diamond drilling results from Santa Maria Resources diamond drill hole SMZ-87-22, is located in an area where a northeast-trending diabase dike cross-cuts a series of stratigraphically-concordant magnetic anomalies. This dike may have intruded parallel to a previously-existing fault or shear zone (Huston and Timoshenko 1988). The most notable assays reported from drill hole SMZ-87-22 include 0.07 oz/ton Au over 1.43 m in ultramafic metavolcanics mineralized with trace pyrite, and 0.017 oz/ton over 1.52 m in quartz wacke mineralized with trace pyrite (Huston and Timoshenko 1988). DDH SMZ-87-10, located at UTM Zone 15 676750 mE 5827500 mN, assayed up to 0.022 oz/ton Au from a 0.64 m wide quartz vein (hosted in mafic metavolcanics) mineralized with trace pyrite, and 0.016 oz/ton Au from a 0.9 m interval of sheared and serpentinized ultramafic metavolcanics.
