Exploration History

1896: In the Gold Creek area, gold was first reported by government geologist on the shores of Gold Creek. 1943-44: Gunflint Iron Mines Ltd. completed a surface work program of prospecting, channel sampling and 2,796 feet (852 m) of diamond drilling (12 holes) to test the Matawin iron formation, it was found that some gold mineralization was found in the general area of the I-Zone. 1956-57: Monpre Mining Company Ltd. explored a block of claims along the Matawin iron formation in central Duckworth and Laurie townships. Ground geophysics, geological mapping and 10,592 feet (3,228 m) of diamond drilling delineated 100 million tons of 30% Fe and an open pit mining pre-feasibility plan was prepared (Litchtblau 1997 and OGS 1995). The property went dormant until 1983 when the patented claims lapsed. 1967: M. Penziwol carried out trenching, sampling, and minor pack-sack drilling. 1977: Umex optioned the property and carried out sampling, VLF-EM surveys, and drilled 2 DDH totalling 152.4 m. 1982: M Penziwol restaked the property. 1983: J. Woynarski optioned the property as a joint venture and carried out prospecting and sampling. 1985: M. Penziwol carried out magnetometer and VLF-EM surveys. 1987: INCO Gold completed a geological and magnetometer survey over a large portion of Duckworth and Laurie Townships identifying fifteen areas of anomalous gold mineralization and/or strong alteration. 1988: Noranda optioned the property and carried out geological mapping, rock and humus sampling, and a radiometric survey. 1990: Inco carried out stripping and sampling. 1995: E. Fournier carried out prospecting and sampling. 2000: E. Fournier and M. Nantel carried out prospecting and sampling. 2006: 6531199 Canada Inc carried out line cutting, EM and Beep mat surveys, prospecting and sampling. 2007: Golden Share Mining Corp. conducted line cutting, IP and magnetometer surveys, prospecting, and sampling. 2008: Golden Share carried out prospecting, mapping, sampling, drilled 8 DDH totalling 485 m, and analyzed a 75 kg samples from channels at the U Zone. 2010: Golden Share conducted IP and resistivity surveys. 2011: Golden Share drilled 1 DDH totalling 252 m. 2019: First Minerals Exploration Ltd carried out a VLF-EM survey. 2020: Portofino Resources Inc. acquired the property and carried out prospecting and sampling.

Mineralization Comments

Aug 22, 2016 (Andrew Tims) - Qtz veins up to 1.5 m and veinlets (mm to 8 cm) carry trace to 8% Py with minor Py pods, Cp and 1-3% fine galena. 1-3% disseminated Py in altered country rock.

Feb 01, 2023 (Therese Pettigrew) - Samples taken by OGS staff in 1972 returned 1.02 oz/t Au, 12.42 oz/t Ag from a quartz vein in a quartz and quartz feldspar porphyry. Galena (4.03%) and minor amounts of pyrite and chalcopyrite occur in some of the veins (Srivastava and Fenwick, 1973). Channel sampling in 2008 returned 0.92 g/t Au over 12 m including 1.84 g/t Au over 4 m, and 1.98 g/t Au over 7.8 m including 4.74 g/t Au over 3 m. The zone is a strong to intense, white, milky, weakly brecciated quartz vein structure with granodiorite xenoliths. It contains trace to 1% disseminated fine grained pyrite and galena and locally up to 3-5% over 10 to 20 cm sections. Visible gold was noted at one location, at 18, 8 m in hole EL-08-01. DDH EL-08-01 returned 2.38 g/t Au over 8.3 m (Assessment report 20000004304). Sampling in 1983 returned 0.328 o/z Au and 3.94 oz/t Ag over 5 feet. A high grade sample from blast rubble returned 1.128 oz/t Au and 11.7 oz/t Ag (Assessment report 52B09SE0046). In 2008, Golden Share Mining analyzed a 75kg sample from channels at the U Zone on the property. Four 1 kg charges averaged 0.61 gpt Au head grade (Assessment report 20000005508).
