Mar 10, 2020 (Therese Pettigrew) - The amethyst occurs along the sides of east-trending gullies. The sides of the gullies are cliffs exposing breccia composed of pink granitic fragments cemented with white to light purple to green quartz. Vugs in this breccia vary from a few centimetres to a metre or more. The large vugs are lined with very dark, and very large points of amethyst (Thunder Bay RGP office mineral deposit files). Outcrops exposed by stripping near the quarry area reveal the dark pink monzonite in contact with dark grey, schistose metasedimentary rock. A breccia zone, 1-1.5 m wide, is situated between the host monzonite and a massive amethyst vein. Fragments in the breccia consist of angular, pink monzonite, and darker, slightly banded, gneissic rock. The fragment size is fairly uniform, about 15-25 cm. The amethyst vein appears to be about 0.5 m wide and is massive, dark purple amethyst. The vein is zoned, with a layer of white quartz, 1 cm wide, lining the wall rock, then a layer of green quartz, 4 cm wide, and then the dark purple amethyst. The zoning is mirrored on both sides of the vein. The best amethyst points occur in vugs within the breccia. Vugs can attain almost 0.5 m in size and can have points of 2 cm diameter or larger. Colour of the amethyst in the vugs varies from pale violet to almost black. Sulphides, notably chalcopyrite, galena, and pyrite, occur scattered through the breccia (Garland, 1994).
