Exploration History

1966-67:The Canadian Nickel Co. Ltd. held a block of claims along a section of the Wakami River that included the showing. Three holes were drilled in the area around the Wakami River showing but on the south shore. All three holes intersected primarily massive to foliated greenstone with occasional sedimentary interbeds. 1984: A ground reconnaissance geological survey was conducted by Western Pacific Energy over a block of 133 claims in northeastern Garnet Township. Subsequently an airborne magnetic and VLF electromagnetic survey was also undertaken over the entire claim block. 1985-86: Western Pacific Energy conducted magnetic, VLF, and self potential surveys over a gridded block of claims that straddled the Wakami River in the northeast corner of Garnet Township. The geophysics was followed by a 13 hole drill program; 7 holes on the west grid and 6 holes on the east grid, south of the Wakami River. The western grid holes tested geophysical targets and intersected cherty, graphitic, and sulphide rich iron formation with intercalated metavolcanics and gabbroic intrusives. The eastern grid holes intersected iron formation, mafic volcanics, porphyries, and gabbroic intrusives. The best assay, 930 ppb Au, was returned from hole G-85-7 within carbonatized and silicified metavolcanics containing pyrite and arsenopyrite mineralization. Holes G-85-10 and G-85-11 returned Au values between 110 and 380 ppb within iron formation. In the summer of 1986 the gridded portions of the property, as well as shorelines and roadsides, were geologically mapped and sampled. An outcrop on the north shore of the Wakami River, to the west of the subject iron formation, revealed chalcopyrite mineralization associated with a quartz vein within what is described as a quartz porphyritic metavolcanic.
