Lithology Comments

Aug 11, 2014 (A Wilson) - Mela to leucogabbro, anorthosite and pyroxenite were intersected in this hole. Anorthosite and leucogabbro are significantly more abundant in the lower portion of the hole. Grain size is typically coarse to very coarse but some occasional fine to medium-grained gabbros are also present. As in previous holes, the gabbros and pyroxenites display a metamorphic assemblage of hornblende and plagioclase with locally variable amounts of chlorite, actinolite and epidote. Oxides and sulphides are also present in most units in variable percentages. Metamorphic overprint on primary texture varies significantly from complete replacement to recognisable primary cumulate texture. Ultramafic layers including pyroxenite and possibly peridotite were intersected in the hole. The pyroxenites are similar as those described in previous holes and are composed mostly of hornblende with different proportions of actinolite, chlorite, oxides and sulphides. As in other holes, deformation appears to typically concentrate in the pyroxenitic sections, as they are softer. Some nice coarse pyroxene cumulate textures are however well preserved locally. Soft layers containing talc are interpreted to be derived from peridotites and/or olivine bearing gabbros and gabbronorites. These rocks are now metamorphosed into an assemblage of chlorite, hornblende, biotite, actinolite, talc and up to several percent of magnetite. Layering in this hole was mostly intersected at near perpendicular to about 20º to perpendicular from top to bottom. Rhythmic layering is locally well defined with anorthosite and pyroxenite centimetric bands. There are very few indications of top direction in this hole but the close observation of contacts between different composition layers may indicate an upright sequence.
