Exploration History

1914: Prospecting led to the discovery of copper at Wally Lake. 1954: Caral Mining Co. carried out prospecting, linecutting, geological mapping, diamond drilling and magnetometer and resistivity surveys. 1959: Head of the Lakes Iron Ltd. drilled 9 DDH totaling 3291 ft. 1960: Head of the Lakes drilled 8 DDH. 1962: Denison Mines Ltd. acquired an interest in Head of the Lakes Iron Ltd. and drilled 37 DDH totaling 3766.3 ft as well as conducted EM and magnetometer surveys. 1964-65: Lakehead Mines Ltd. conducted geological mapping and diamond drilling (6 holes totaling 1050.5 ft). 1966: Lakehead Mines brought some claims to lease. 1968: Prospecting, trenching and sampling examined the contact of the gabbro to the NW of Sally Lake. 1980: Lakehead Mines became part of a merger to form Parlake Resources Ltd. Parlake carried out a limited exploration program to examine the property for its platinum and palladium potential. 1990: Parlake sold 100% interest of the claims in the Wally Lake area to Redstone Resources. 1991: Redstone conducted an exploration program including check traverses to ensure earlier mapping was accurate, linecutting, prospecting, geophysics, soil geochemistry and DDH (4 holes totaling 2,128 ft). 1993: prospecting and trenching. 1996: Franco-Nevada Mining Corp. acquired Redstone. 2005: Claims staked by Benton Resources Corp. who carried out prospecting and sampling. 2008: Benton Resources drilled 6 DDH totalling 1180 m. 2010: Property purchased by Stillwater Canada in December. 2013: Stillwater carried out drilling

Geology Comments

Jan 09, 2015 (Therese Pettigrew) - The property is located along the north-central portion of the Coldwell Alkaline Complex and are underlain predominantly by basal olivine-rich gabbro in contact with syenite. The most important unit on the property is the lowermost portion of the layered gabbro complex in contact unconformably with the granites, metasediments and metavolcanics. This basal gabbro exhibits disruptive layering and may or may not have xenoliths of granite, metasediments or metavolcanics at the contact. The gabbros and contact rocks are commonly cut by later stage syenite dykes. Inward from the intrusive contact, the layered olivine gabbro is replaced by a more homogeneous pyroxene-olivine gabbro.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 17, 2019 (Therese Pettigrew) - The basal contact olivine gabbro contains the mineralization, which is best defined by ilmenite-rich magnetite zones with varying amounts of disseminated sulphides. Magnetite content is variable from fine-grained trace amounts to medium and sometimes coarse-grained intergrowths of magnetite locally accumulating as high as 70%. Concentrations of sulphides are most prominent close to the gabbro contact and when the olivine gabbro is coarse grained. The sulphides are generally fine- to medium-grained disseminated intergrowths within a more quartzo-feldspathic matrix. The most prominent sulphides are pyrite and pyrrhotite and varying amounts of chalcopyrite. Total sulphide content usually varies from trace to 10%. Drill programs from 1954-66 totaled 22, 281.1 ft of drilling in 108 holes. Several tabular titaniferous magnetite bodies with chalcopyrite and minor nickel up to 60 ft wide were delineated. Denison Mines carried out magnetic separation and flotation test on the magnetite-ilmenite-rich zone for the purpose of investigating whether the iron and titanium could be separated. The results indicated an iron still contaminated with titanium, but copper recovery was good (AFRI 42D15SW0100). Assay results from the 1959-62 drill campaign ranged from 0.17 to 0.91% Cu, averaging 0.49% Cu. The highest assays from the 1993 prospecting program are as follows: 0.2% Cu, 210 ppm Zn, 2.0 ppm Ag, 178 ppm Ni, 16.9% Fe, 55 ppb Pt, 122 ppb Pd. 12 grab samples collected by Benton Resources Corp in 2005 assayed up to 0.326 g/t Pt, 2.163 g/t Pd, 0.228 g/t Au, 163 ppm Co, 6835 ppm Cu, and 309 ppm Ni (Assessment report 20000001693).
