Jan 29, 2016 (Therese Pettigrew) - A carbonate-diopside unit divides the northern tuffaceous units from a broad band of sedimentary rocks to the south. The carbonate-diopside rock is comprised of 60-70% diopside, 20-25% calcite and 15-20% grossular garnet. Feldspar, quartz, tourmaline, epidote and a bright green mineral tentatively identified as apatite comprise 5% of the rock. The rock has the appearance of a calcsilicate skarn. The presence of either minor barite or scheelite in the matrix gives this rock a relatively high specific gravity in comparison to the volcanic rocks. The width and composition of the unit vary along strike. The average thickness is 10 m and composition ranges from silica-rich to carbonate-rich. Disseminated, irregularly distributed molybdenite comprises up to 2% of the carbonate-rich areas (AFRI 42C12NW0040).
