Access Description: The occurence is easily accessible through the all-weather gravel road, the Duckworth road, which branches from the paved road leading to the former Inco Shebandowan Mine, some 2 kilometers from Highway 11. Access to area via the ATV driveable 518 road to the I Zone. After the I Zone trenches the trails may be accessible to the area of the occurence.

Exploration History

1896: In the Goldcreek area, gold was first reported by government geologist on the shores of Gold Creek. 1943-44: Gunflint Iron Mines Ltd. completed a surface work program of prospecting, channel sampling and 2,796 feet (852 m) of diamond drilling (12 holes) to test the Matawin iron formation, it was found that some gold mineralization was found in the general area of the I-Zone. 1956-57: Monpre Mining Company Ltd. explored a block of claims along the Matawin iron formation in central Duckworth and Laurie townships. Ground geophysics, geological mapping and 10,592 feet (3,228 m) of diamond drilling delineated 100 million tons of 30% Fe and an open pit mining pre-feasibility plan was prepared (Litchtblau 1997 and OGS 1995). The property went dormant until 1983 when the patented claims lapsed. 1983-84: Jalna Resources Ltd completed a significant exploration over a large area of Duckworth and Laurie Townships including ground and airborne surveys, geological mapping, geochemical surveys, trenching, sampling and overburden drilling. Prospecting verified earlier anomalous gold showings in the area of the I Zone. 1984-85: Anaconda Canada Exploration Ltd. (“Anaconda”) followed up the work completed by Jalna with 3,665 feet (1117 m) of diamond drilling, in 13 holes and confirmed the anomalous gold values over the I-Zone. 1987: INCO Gold completed a geological and magnetometer survey over a large portion of Duckworth and Laurie Townships identifying fifteen areas of anomalous gold mineralization and/or strong alteration.

Geology Comments

Aug 19, 2016 (Andrew Tims) - Silicification and pyritization occur with ininterbedded magnetite- rich argillite and non-magneticarenite/siltstone. Alteration and mineralization are strongest at the contacts. The argillite is strongly chloritized in these areas. Quartz occurs as a clear, glassy quartz in irregular pods and as stringers trending at approximately 030, especially near the major sinistral fault at the east of the zone. This fault has the same orientation as the stringers. Foliation in the area of the fault is of significantly different orientation to that elsewhere in the zone. A second parallel fault to the west is seen in one of the trenches and disrupts bedding in the sediments, probably due to drag folding. Evidence suggests dextral displacement. The fault appears to cut off a 15 m wide syenite dike which is seen to the east of the fault but not to the west. However, the displacement of a mafic tuff unit to the north of the zone suggests that the dike may pinch out to the west, or was missed in mapping. The syenite cuts a 25 m wide, coarse-grained granodiorite.

Mineralization Comments

Aug 19, 2016 (Andrew Tims) - Mineralization occurs largely as coarse, euhedral pyrite in E-W trending alteration zones approximately 1-2 m wide within magnetite-rich argillite. These zones contain up to 30% pyrite. Locally, these zones are weathered to gossan.Adjacent to these zones are silicified zones of similar width containing upwards of 60% quartz which contains less than 1'l. disseminated pyrite.
