Mineralization Comments

Feb 07, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - The vein material occurs in a fracture zone 8 to 10 feet wide and which can be traced 1,000 feet striking north 70 degrees east. The dip is 75 degrees south. Spectacular crystals of clear quartz up to 2.5 inches in diameter can be obtained from the east dump. Indications of crustified banding were observed on pieces taken from the dump, the minerals being colourless quartz, calcite, green fluorite, and amethyst. A few small crystals of pyrite and also calcite encrust the larger quartz crystals. About 25 per cent of the mineralized zone consists of inclusions of wall-rock. The country rock is flat-lying Animikie iron formation (Tanton, 1931). The Weekly Herald reported on Feb 8, 1890 that the vein carries native and black silver as well as sphalerite, with some of the best specimens assaying as high as $700. The Engineering and Mining Journal reported on Feb 22, 1890 that the vein assayed from $60 to $150 per ton silver (approximately 60-150 opt Ag, based on a price of $1 per ounce).
