Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: The Cariboo Mine is located approx. 19 km SW of Thunder Bay, in the SE corner of Paipoonge Township. The site may be accessed via Hwy 61 southerly to Hwy 130. Turn right (west) on Highway 130 and turn back to the north along 130 to Candy Mountain Road and follow the road until it dead ends. The site is located to the south of the road at this point.



Exploration History

1873: J.J. Vickers acquired the property from the crown. 1888-1890: The property was owned by Mr. Baninger, Mr. Wilson, and H. Siley. An adit of 45.7 m was developed. From this, a crosscut was cut, and another drift was opened up. No assessment files have been found on record.

Lithology Comments

Sep 24, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - A fault on the property cuts through flat-lying slates of the Animikie Formation. Fissure veins from 45.7-71.1 cm trend N-S, and cement the fault zone. The foot wall of the fault is well defined. The vein dips 20-25 degrees to the west (RGP Mineral Deposit files, Thunder Bay Office).

Mineralization Comments

Sep 24, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - Native silver, leaf and argentite silver, sphalerite, and galena can be found in a matrix of calcite. A newspaper reported that the vein assayed 16 opt Ag (The Weekly Herald, March 3, 1888). The vein was reported to be 45.7 to 71.1 cm wide (RGP Mineral Deposit files, Thunder Bay office).
