Access Description: Located 4 km south of Winona in the City of Stoney Creek.



Exploration History

Mid-1940’s; quarry opened by Quigley Construction. 1947: Quarry purchased by Dominion Crushed Stone Company. 1951: Quarry purchased by Armbro Materials and Construction Limited. Mid-1950s:water well records registered to Armbro Materials and Construction Limited; quarry expanded west and south of the current entrance. 1950’s to 1975: Quarry expanded to two working areas; south quarry (south of the original Forty Mile Creek, including the Eramosa scarp) and the north quarry (north of original Forty Mile creek bed); April 1975, extraction in the north quarry ceased and served as a holding pond for dewatering discharge. 1984: quarry purchased by Waterford Sand and Gravel Limited: quarry had been inactive for several years prior to 1984. North Quarry reportedly full of water; south quarry partially filled. June 1985: Dewatering of south quarry commenced; discharge directed to Forty Mile Creek bed at western property boundary. 1995: Vinemount II expansion north and west purchased by Waterford Sand and Gravel Limited.1997: water level in north quarry lowered in preparation for removal of rock between the north and south quarries. April 1999: Forty Mile Creek re-aligned north of Vinemount II expansion property; discharge temporarily pumped into north quarry during of present –day sump location. November 1999:Discharge re-established to the rerouted Forty Mile Creek. 2000-2002: rock between north and south quarry removed. December 2005: extraction began in south area of Vinemount II expansion Property.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (M Barua) - The quarry exposes 19.47 m of Middle Silurian section described as follows: 4.16 m of Eramosa Member dolostone, dark to light brown, fine to med.crystalline, thin-bedded, rich crinoidal zones with laminations and a sharp lower contact; 4.82 m of Vinemount shale beds, interbedded dolostone and shales, light buff to dark brown, fine to med crystalline, very shaly in places, flame structures and graded beds present, abundant gypsum and calcite nodules, fossils like brachiopods, crinoids are seen; 2.02 m Goat Island Member (Lockpot Fm) argillaceous dolostone, grey to dark brown, fine crystalline, med-bedded, interbedded shaly zones with abundant fossils, chert beds and nodules present in upper 1 m, gypsum and calcite scattered, sharp lower contact; 5.45 m of Goat Island Member (Lockport Fm) dolostone, med to grey brown, fine to med. crystalline, thin to med-bedded, stylolitic contacts, bituminous odour, lower 2.4 m has extensive chert lenses (refered to as Ancaster Chert Beds), gypsum and calcite occur in vugs, sharp lower contact; 3.02 m of Goat Island Member (Lockport Fm) dolostone, med. grey, med.crystalline, thin to med-bedded, shaly and sometime bituminous, upper beds massive, large white gypsum nodules (2x15cm) in vugs along with some calcite surrounding the gypsums.
