Exploration History

TOWNSHIP: NASSAGAWEY NOW PART OF THE MUNICIPAL TOWNSHIP OF HALTON HILLS, TOWNSHIP: ESQUESING NOW PART OF THE MUNICIPAL TOWNSHIP OF MILTON, Regional Municipality of Halton.Opened in 1962, it is the largest producing quarry in Canada which produced 5.8 million tonnes in 2001.The licenced area covers 467 hectares(1150 acres) on the Niagara Escarpment .Another 83 ha extension to the north has recently been granted to Dufferin Aggregates

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (M Barua) - The 15.8 m deep Milton Quarry exposes coarse-crystalline, grey-buff, thick to massive-bedded and fossiliferous dolostone of the Middle Silurian Amabel Formation. Below the quarry floor, occurs the argillaceous units including 4 m of the Reynales Formation, a dolostone with shaly partings and 11 m of Cabot Head Formation, a red and green shaly dolostone. Overburden averages 1.5 m in thickness. The Amabel Formation contains large crinoids, brachiopods,bryozoans, gastropods and corals. Abundant fossil fragments are also found in the Reynales Formation.
