Exploration History

Pre 1920 : a large quarry is described in 1920, when it is water-filled, as being over 70,000 cu yds in size. A 23 ft section is exposed and described but the water is said to be 15 ft deep in places. The stone was used for building houses and, later, in the construction of the Cardinal canal. By 1938 it had also been quarried for road metal.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The section is described in 1938 as a fine-grained, brownish dolomite with some thin shale partings and calcite vugs. It forms part of the Oxford (Beekmantown) Formation. Beds are from 4-16 inches thick. Samples # 199 and 199A were taken.
