Exploration History

1970 : exploratory drilling by Canada Cement Lafarge Ltd. 1974 : opening of the plant. The quarry occupies and area of about 50 ha with a single bench of about 18 m. Finished cement is shipped by road, rail and (70 %) water.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The quarry exposes an 18 m section of Middle Ordovician Verulam Formation. This is dark grey and thin-bedded with 2 horizons of argillaceous and siliceous limestone. The upper horizon is up to 6 m thick and occurs in the middle of the quarry face at 6-12 m deep. The lower horizon is about 3 m thick and occurs in the lower 3 m of the formation. Overburden is 1-4.5 m thick (av. 2m).
