Point Location Description: Precise - entrance to quarry

Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: Beside the North Fredericksburgh township garage. The Storey (Napanee) Quarry expanded to take in the McFarland (Napanee) Quarry. The latter was situated just E of the Storey Quarry, on the N side of Hwy 2, on the E outskirts of Napanee. The Storey Quarry is described as being on top of the scarp just N of the roadcut on Hwy 2. Access to the quarry is through a locked gate along the bend in Old Kingston Rd, just north of Hwy 2.



Exploration History

Circa 1900: the Storey Quarry has operated since the turn of the century and was operating in 1989. pre-1963: the McFarland Quarry operated just E of the Storey Quarry but closed in 1963. It was incorporated into the Storey Quarry by 1989. Crushed stone is the most recent product of the quarries. There is a complex lift pattern in the quarry due to its history and an uneven bedrock surface. Active in 1989. 2023: The quarry is licensed by Lafarge Canada Inc., but seems inactive.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The upper member of the Gull River Formation is exposed for 16 m in this quarry. It is mostly microcrystalline-very fine-grained with thin shale partings common. Overburden is up to 2 m thick. The limestone has a very high lime content. See Limestone Industries of Ontario Vol. 2 (1998) for a section.
