Lithology Comments

Nov 21, 2013 (A Wilson) - The cliff face exhibits a wide variety of rocks. From the base of the section the rock types are: interbedded buff and white calcareous sandstone, white siliceous sandstone, and thin-bedded mottled and pitted sandstone. The sandstone is variably coloured including: buff, red, brown and white. Potsdam sandstone is exposed in cliffs rising to 100 feet above the highway. The rock at this site is finer-grained than at the Kingston Silica Mines site and the Hart Road site. It has a higher iron content and a considerably higher content of carbonate and feldspar.

Mineralization Comments

Nov 21, 2013 (A Wilson) - The sandstone at this location is not considered to be a good source of high-grade silica sand because of the impurities within it. However, the occurrence may have potential for development as a source of lower-grade silica sands. Some of the beds may be suitable for dimension stone and some foundry sand, blast sand could also be derived from this area. Sampling from the site returned the following analyses: 87.02-98.20% SiO2, 0 - 0.49% Fe2O3, 0.45 - 2.86% Al2O3, 0.06 - 0.20% MgO and 0 - 3.41% CaO.
