Lithology Comments

Nov 21, 2013 (A Wilson) - The area underlain by sandstone is approximately 3.2 km long by 0.8 km wide at the northeast end and 0.4 km at the southwest end. The average thickness of the sandstone is approximately 7.6 m thick. The majority of the rock is a friable siliceous sandstone. The stratigraphic section consists of massive white to grey siliceous sandstone (3.6 m) overlying red and grey banded sandstone (0.9 m), intraformational conglomerate with quartzite boulders and pebbles (0.76 m), white siliceous sandstone (21.3 m) and reddish-brown conglomerate (0.3 m). The area is now included in Charleston Lake Provincial Park.

Feb 21, 2013 (A Wilson) - An analysis of the sandstone returned 99.07% SiO2, Al2O3 0.32%, Fe2O3 0.10%, FeO 0.07%, CaO 0.12%, MgO 0.07%. The site was considered to have some promise for the development as a source of silica sand, provided that a transportation route was developed. The site is located within Charleston Lake Provincial Park.
