Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The gabbro at this site is part of the Mountain Grove Mafic Intrusion. It is dark grey to black in colour and is quite attractive. The area shows fair outcropping with intense irregular jointing. The rock is uniformly massive and mediumt to coarse grained. Jointing, felsic stringers, and trace amounts of pyrite combine to make this a poor prospect for building stone. The weathered surface is up to 5 mm in depth. The grain size is uniformly medium to coarse. The texture is uniformly massive. Joints strike at approximately 130 degrees and are spaced .25 to .5 meters apart.

Site Visit Information

Date: Aug 30, 2002

Geologist: C Papertzian

Notes: This location was visited on the 23rd of July, 2002. The outcrops along the road are not very massive and tend to be intensively jointed. The area of the test block was located. Many felsic stringers were also seen. This area requires more extensive mapping to locate an area where jointing is not as extensive and deleterious minerals are absent.
