Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: Travel 30 km north of Kingston on Highway 38 to the Desert Lake Rd., 1 km north of Verona. Turn east (right) and travel 6.7 km to Deyos Corners and turn North (left0 and travel 1 km to the north portion of the quarry. To reach the base of the quarry, turn right on Wilde's Robinson's and Howard's access road for 150 m and turn right and continue another 100m.



Exploration History

Between 1900 and 1951 this feldspar mine produced 228,690 tons. The mine was opened in 1900 by the Kingston Feldspar and Mining company of Kingston and operated until 1916, when it was taken over by Feldspar Ltd. of Toronto who operated until 1918. The mine was idle until 1928 when it was leased to the Genesse Feldspar Company of Rochester, New York, and operated until 1931. In 1941 the mine was leased by E.H. Storms and S.A. Price of Toronto under the name Federal Feldspar Company. This company produced 414 tons of feldspar. In 1945 the mine was purchased by the Canadian Flint and Spar Company of Ottawa who mined in 1947, 1948, 1950 and 1951. 1981-1982 NRD acquired the claims and contracted A.C.A Howe Int. to map the mine area and they estimated that the core contained 80,000 tons of quartz. 1986 - W.S. Kennedy had 5 claims staked. In 1989 3 dd holes were completed to test the potential and the continuation of the quartz core at depth.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The Richardson Feldspar Mine was the largest in Ontario. The granite pegmatite dyke strikes north-northeast and dips steeply to the west. The dyke cuts metagabbro and paragneiss, which make up the west wall of the dyke. On the east side, 150 feet from the pit, marble is exposed. Near the margins of the dyke there are horses of hornblende gneiss country rock in the pegmatite. The workings are 500 feet in length, 200 feet in width, and 150 feet deep. The dyke is zoned with a central core of quartz. The intermediate zone consisted predominantly of brick red microcline perthite, with some quartz and albite. Some accessory hornblende, biotite and sulphides are present with minor titanite, magnetite, calcite, apatite, and tourmaline.

Site Visit Information

Date: Jan 21, 2005

Geologist: C Papertzian

Notes: This property was visited on May 10th, 2004 along with the mine hazards co-ordinator. The pit was last fenced in 1986. There is a section of fence that has been removed at the highest point in the quarry. The quarry above this cliff is 80 feet deep while at the shallow end of the quarry the water is said to be approximately 30 feet deep. There were no hazard signs posted to warn the general public of the open pit.
