Exploration History

A new test quarry in coloured marble was opened in 1996 by Senator Stone Supply Limited, 5 km east of Actinolite. A single lift has been opened in the quarry with the quarry face ranging from 1 to 4 meters in height over a face length of approximately 40 meters. Block removal employed closely spaced drilling with a quarry bar of by use of a diamond wire saw, producing numerous, rectangular blocks in the 6 to 18 ton range. About 20 large blocks, including an 18 ton block have been shipped to Italy for testing.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The marble exhibits an attractive, somwhat irregular and in places contorted colour banding ranging from 1 to 15 cm in thinkess and in colour from white to pastel pink, to pale blue, with occasional greenish and buff coloured bands. The strike of the banding (foliation) is 050 degrees with 40 degree south dips parallel to a granite contact that lies some distance to the south but is obscured by overburden. The quarry site is cut by three 30 to 60 cm wide prominent mafic dykes that are conformable to the foliation (colour banding or possibly bedding). The marble is dominantly calcitic in composition with evident calc-silicate minerals present throughout most of the stone. Jointing is widely spaced, 2 to 5 meters, but there are near weathered and surface fractured areas that make it difficult to measure jointing reliably over the whole outcrop area. A number of unfractured blocks weighing up to 18 tons have been recovered from the first lift. This is evidence that the jointing is widely spaced.
