Exploration History

ELZ-01 (OFR5712), 86-ELZ-06 (OGS 1986) : 1963 : Madoc Marble Quarries opened the dolomitic marble quarry - a 15 ft face is cut into the W end of a low ridge. There is also a quarry area 125 x 165 ft (37.5 x 49.5 m) of loose rock and blocks. Some of this marble was used in the production of terrazzo chips. 1973 : the 'Tweed Calcium' property was optioned from Lockwood and drilled by C.R. Young. In 1974 it was optioned to Ontario Marble (Pleuss-Staufer ?), extensively drilled and tested and taken to lease. The property was purchased from Lockwood and Marsh (?) and the area designated as 'Extractive Industry'. (Pleuss-Staufer) Omya Inc drilled in the area S and E of the old dolomite quarry, between it and the granite gneiss several hundred meters to the S. They outlined about 3 million tonnes of white, high calcium marble containing < 2 % acid insolubles . This zone is over 2,000 m in length and 120-250 m wide. The grade averages 96.8 % CaCO3 with a brightness of 95.6. 1991 : The 350 acre property is owned by C.R. Young but Pleuss-Staufer has cancelled its lease. 2000 : development work is being carried out by J. Palau.

The S zone is the high purity calcitic marble drilled by Omya Inc. The dolomite zone is about 50 m wide, medium-grained, buff to white with an average of 3 % impurities. N of the quarry, the dolomitic marble contains 5-10 % tremolite.
