Exploration History

1901: Mining from 4 small open pits by the Anglo-American Iron Company. Shipments recorded include 3000 tons in 1900, and 2,186 tons in 1901 and 1902 (MRC 11, p176). Operations ceased in 1902. In 1969, the property was owned by Inco (Res. Geol. 1986 Field Report). Observations in the Resident Geologist 1986 Field Report state that the workings are more extensive then early reports state, suggesting that more work was done at this site between 1902 and 1986 (perhaps by INCO), even though it does not appear in the references.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Laidlaw) - The magnetite mineralization is of the contact metasomatic variety. Fine to medium-coarse grained magnetite occurs erratically as fine impregnations in a skarn zone 60ft wide and is made up of garnet, hornblende, pyroxene and calcite at the northern contact of the easterly-trending sill-like Tudor gabbro, where it intrudes a narrow band of marble and fine-grained contact metamorphosed amphibolite. The contact zone is cut by calcite veinlets, diorite and trondhjemite dikes and some sulphides, mainly pyrite and pyrrhotite. Much of this area contains ore which is too low in Fe and too high in S to be shipped without previous concentration (Res. Geol. 1986 Field Report).
