Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: From the junction of highway 7 & 41 travel north on highway 41 for 14.3 km. Turn east (right) on the Harlowe road and travel 8.2 km to Harlowe. Turn south (right) at the stop sign in Harlowe and proceed another 7.4 km to the vicinity of the property which is on the south side of the Arden-Harlowe road. A very large maple tree marks a bush road that leads to the pits and stripped area.

Exploration History

During the summer of 1939 the Gold Base Mining Corporation, Ltd., carried out surface work at this location. It had been acquired under option by them from David Veley, the previous owner. The mineralized zone was exposed intermittently along the strike by means of pits and trenches for several hundred feet. In 1991 12 grab samples were collected by Rio Algom exploration Inc. during a property examination. Two samples taken from the original pit yielded the best assays of 1.17 and 1.44 ounces of gold per ton. Mr. Henry Veley in 1997 and 1998 completed considerable overburden stripping as well as cleaning out the original trenches. The mineralization was traced along the complete length of the property, a distance of 300 meters. Trenching in in 1998 also discovered additional parallel quartz veins. Eleven channel samples along with 32 grab samples taken from both the known and newly discovered quartz veins, returned mixed assay results. Resampling of the main pit of the Gold Base showing resulted in an assay result of 0.967 ounces of gold per ton. 2007: Opawica Explorations Inc. optioned the property from owner Henry Veley and completed diamond drilling and assaying. Six holes totaling 515 meters were drilled and 96 samples of core were assayed for gold +/- silver. The best assay was 0.87 gram per tonne over 0.85 meter core length in drill hole OPW-V-07-01. The option was subsequently dropped.

Geology Comments

May 21, 2008 (C Papertzian) - W.D. Harding (1942), described the Gold Base Occurrence as follows: During the summer of 1939 the Gold Base Mining Corporation Limited, carried out surface work on a gold-quartz vein dipping steeply northward situated on lot 30, concession 5, Kennebec township. This location had been acquired under option by the company from David Veley, the previous owner. The vein strikes in an east-west direction parallel to the greywackes and impure quatzites. The mineralized zone, which includes quartz, schist, and some limestone, ranges in width from a few inches to 5 feet. It has been exposed intermittently along the strike by means of pits and trenches for several hundred feet. The minerals in the zone consist mostly of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and malachite. Visible gold is said to have been present, but none was identified by the writer. A grab sample of the best looking mineralized material taken by the writer from the vein zone was assayed at the provincial Assay Office and yielded 0.38 ounces per ton in gold. The deposit is situated along the contact between felsic intrusive and mafic metavolcanic rocks.

Mineralization Comments

May 21, 2008 (D Laidlaw) - 2007 drilling: Main vein was sampled in all holes and the best gold assay was 0.87 grams per tonne over 0.85 metre core length in drill hole OPW-V-07-01. Quartz carbonate vein is mineralized with pyrite and minor chalcopyrite (width 0.3 to 1.5 metres) and has a strike length exceeding 300 metres.

Mineral Record Details

Site Visit Information

Date: Aug 29, 2002

Geologist: C Papertzian

Notes: The deposit was visited on June 21st, 2002. The trenching, stripping and channel sampling from the 1998 exploration program was still evident. To date the mineralized zone is approximately 300 meters long by up to 2 meters wide. An assay of 0.12 ounces of gold per ton was obtained from a grab sample on the east end of the property while one assay in the middle of the property was 0.16 ounces or gold per ton. Both of these samples were obtained from parallel quartz veins south of the main vein. The main showing on the west end of the property returned an assay of 0.967 ounces of gold per ton. The prospector was planning to strip an area between the original occurrence and the extreme east end of the property in order to uncover additional parallel quartz veins. These veins would then be channel sampled for gold.

Date: Mar 20, 2003

Geologist: C Papertzian

Notes: The deposit was visited on October 29th, 2002. Two samples were collected from a newly stripped area midway between the original showing and the extreme east end of the property. These were sent to the MNDM lab in Sudbury to be analysed for Au by fire assay. Both returned below detectable results. The samples were collected from the following co-ordinates 340253E, 4961437N and 340101E, 4961507N. Both samples were taken from fine to medium grained narrow quartz veins, (1 to 2 inchs thick). Both contained sulphides-pyrite.

Date: Aug 11, 2003

Geologist: C Papertzian

Notes: This occurrence was visited on May20th, 2003 along with the Resident Geologist, district geologist and an MNR biologist. The complete site was looked in some detail. A sample of quartz vein was collected immediately east of the main pit on a secondary narrow vein immediately south of the main vein. The sample was sent to the MNDM lab in Sudbury. Results were undetectable for Gold. Further exploration on the extreme west end of the property were to be completed this field season.
