Exploration History

Circa 1912 : most of the good stone had been removed and the purple stone was practically exhausted. Some very large blocks were obtained (30 x 2 x 11/2 ft.) but, because contractors paid the owner for the privilege of quarrying, much valuable stone was destroyed and no proper quarry ever opened.

Lithology Comments

Sep 16, 2015 (A Wilson) - This Potsdam sandstone is made up of characteristically broad bands of a purplish hue which vary from narrow lines to 8-10 inches in thickness. Much of the intermediate material is yellow, fading to white. The stone breaks freely with the bedding and easily across it. The sequence is medium-bedded (10-18 inches) with a hard, flinty, white sandstone below. Heavy overburden lies to the west. There are actually 2 quarries that operated intermittently on the Hughes property. In one quarry there is 2-4 ft of thin-bedded, medium-grained grey and purple mottled Potsdam sandstone. Random flagstone (2-3 inches thick) was the main product. A second quarry, 1/4 ml south of the road, exposes 3-4 ft. of medium-bedded (8-10 inch), even-bedded, grey and purple mottled Potsdam sandstone. The latter were used for ashlar. On this property, the valuable stone occurs on a knoll overlooking a small lake and is exposed over an area of about 50 acres. The stone was quarried from two different, but adjacent sites.
