Mineralization Comments

Sep 09, 2015 (A Wilson) - Phosphate was mined on these lots as far back as 1867, when the Rideau Mining Company conducted operations for a short period. Other lots, including 8, 9, and 10, were simultaneously worked by this Company, who opened up a number of shallow pits and shipped a quantity of phosphate to Germany. Many of the openings have since been exploited for mica, which occurs in some quantity on the veins. The principal work for apatite was carried out on lot 4. There, some half-dozen narrow pits have been opened upon parallel leads of phosphate and very dark mica, the openings being some 10 to 15 feet apart, and situated only about 50 feet from the shore of Big Rideau lake. The deepest of these pits is down 70 feet, the remainder being only shallow openings. The average width of the pits does not exceed 5 feet. Considerable phosphate was extracted, also, from lot 10, and the workings here are somewhat extensive.
