Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The quarry is about 2 m deep, within the lower member of the Bobcaygeon Formation. 2 beds were quarried (a 1.4 m upper unit and a 0.6 m lower unit). The stone is dark brownish-grey, fine-grained with a number of shale seams (which sometimes cause parting on long exposure to the weather). The lower beds contain nodules of black chert. Widely-spaced joints allow the removal of very large (huge) blocks. Soil cover is only a few cms deep for a distance of 130 m or more from the W bank of the river. Sample # 27 taken in 1938.
