Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - Buckley Lake is a large marsh area occupying much of the N part of the township. Parallel, dredged channels along the W side occupy an area of 45 ha. Reserves of marl NE of these workings are probably very large. The lake was drained at the time the marl was excavated and open water is now restricted to the old dredged channels; the rest is an open grass and cane marsh (0.5 m of fibrous, peaty material overlies 3-4 m of marl). There is a moderate amount of shell material and minor fibrous, organic material. Sand underlies the marl and the lower marl strata can be seriously contaminated by grains of quartz and mica. It is a rather low quality marl due to sand contamination and colour (grey with very low brightness). The lake has been a private hunting and fishing preserve for many years and has value as a wetland nesting habitat.
